Forth Conversation with Mehran

This week was Halloween, and I could not resist asking Mehran how his first Halloween went. He said that he hung out with his friends, but he could not remember what he dressed up as. Therefore, I forced him to try and describe his costume to me, and he said, “It was that guy from that one movie. He had a knife.” Well needless to say, I failed at guessing what his costume was, but this did not stop me from trying. I spent practically half of our conversation guessing a variety of different things; however, I eventually gave up and accepted defeat.
Staying on the holiday topic, I then asked Mehran if he was excited for Thanksgiving. He said yes, but he said that he did not know what happened on Thanksgiving or understand why we celebrated it. Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday, however, I really struggled when I was trying to describe it to him. All I could say is that it was about family and food. I probably repeated the word turkey one hundred times in that minute alone. I found it extremely difficult to explain Thanksgiving to someone because I have never had to before; everyone I have meet in my life has simply just known. Thinking back, I did not do a good job describing it to Mehran at all.
Mehran also mentioned that his birthday was November 5th and that he would be turning 22. I asked him if he was excited for his birthday, and he said that he didn’t know what he was going to do yet; after all, twenty-two is not the most exciting birthday in the world. He then asked me what the big birthdays were here, and I told him sixteen, eighteen, and twenty-one. These are the most exciting because sixteen is when you can drive, eighteen is when you are considered an adult, and twenty-one because that is when you can drink.
Mehran and my conversation focused on a wide variety of holidays, which is always a fun topic. I really enjoyed our conversation this week, but I find it odd that this week marked the halfway point of conversations. I feel as though there is so much to get to know about Mehran, yet so little time.

  1. I also talked to my conversation partner, Paula, about the upcoming holidays. She and I compared the holiday traditions from the U.S. and her home country of Columbia, so it was definitely interesting hearing her culture's norms for something I am so familiar with
